Central Cinema - 21st & Union

I went to the Central Cinema for the first time this past Monday to see Casablanca. I’ve seen the movie on a TV set before but never on the big screen, or decently sized screen with a projector in this case. Central Cinema is a small theater with a dining area near the front where you purchase the tickets then you follow a wide hallway that slightly forks off dividing the bathroom, kitchen and theater. The small size is not an uncomfortable setting; the atmosphere is nicely lit with a modern diner feel. The theater had a small thrust stage in front of the screen as well as two pianos, I was lost as to why a movie theater would have a stage and piano. But after a journey to the bathroom you see a wall that has flyers of all the upcoming events housed there, such as a “pop princess sing along” and “heckle vision” where you can text smart-ass remarks about the movie you’re watching and they appear on screen.

Another neat aspect is half of the theater area has dinning booths so you can order food throughout the movie. The different popcorn mixes they offer are nice: cinnamon sugar, curry powder, garlic. I got the cinnamon sugar, its was ok, it would have been better had they actually mixed it with the popcorn instead of just a center sprinkle. I also got the Field Roast in a blanket, which was edible; it’s hard to mess up wrapping bread around a link especially when Field Roast is involved. I thought the presentation was over played though, fancy swirls of ketchup and mustard on an oversized plate and 3 leafs of spinach - but I digress. The overall experience was great the wait-staff and host were kind. The movie was great (they took no part in that) and what they are doing is awesome and these are the theaters that I hope stick around trying to provide a genuine atmosphere for your movie experience. I plan to return soon.

This issue has become an unintentionally themed/dedication(?) issue. Pow Wow’s and Pretending Dumb (a short story by John Cardoso) is concluded in this issue and I also wanted to do a decent Interview with Johnny who just launched his new site The Canvas, THEN I came across a picture of him in a roll of 35mm I just got developed. So here’s to you Johnny.

This isn’t about a hippie, but about a sandwich.

One of the difficult things about being vegan is finding food sold to the mass public that is free of animal products. Fast food places are out of the option (for me anyway), I try not to eat at non-vegan restaurants as much as possible cause it’s just a pain in the ass trying to figure out substitutions and putting faith in the cook staff to properly prepare it as such. But on those occasions when I’m out and need something quick and relatively healthy to eat I go to the house Jared built, Subway. They have a sandwich that is pretty safe for the most part especially if you follow these 2 rules when you order a Veggie Delite or The Dirty Vegan:

1. Go when it’s not busy: If you go during non-peak hours the “Sandwich Artist” will be able to better prepare your sandwich by using fresh gloves that haven’t just handled meat, cheese, or the bathroom trash.

2. Ask them if they could wipe the knife: The knife that they slice the sub with sits in a bucket of ice-water, along with remnants of each sandwich the knife has cut (tuna w/ mayo, meatball subs, roast beef).

Once you have done that (and of course don’t get the honey oat bread) your sandwich is pretty much vegan. I usually get wheat with everything but olives, extra jalapenos and red onions w/ one stripe of Dijon mustard, sweet onion, and red wine vinegar. Then once it’s wrapped, I take that and consume. Of course don’t forget you can tip your sandwich maker too, most Subway’s have tip jars now.
